European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is the leading financial services regulator in the European Union. The three main objectives of this European authority are: financial stability, investor protection, and orderly markets. This regulatory body replaced the Committee of European Securities Regulators in 2011.
It is worth mentioning that ESMA created both MiFID in 2004, and subsequently MiFID II in 2014. The main purpose of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive is to harmonise the legislation for financial services across the European Economic Area.
